A 60-year-old man was killed when his Mercedes slammed into a stopped construction vehicle on the New York State Thruway in Ulster County.

Troopers responded around 11:15 a.m. Monday, Dec. 8, to a two-vehicle crash on I-87 northbound near milepost 80.7 in the town of Esopus, according to New York State Police.

A preliminary investigation found that a Mercedes-Benz heading north in the left lane struck a Freightliner that was stopped across the left shoulder and partially in the lane as part of an active construction operation.

Multiple work vehicles were positioned in the area to shift traffic to the right lane while crews installed signage, police said.

The driver of the Mercedes, David Moyal, of Kingston, was taken to Kingston Health Alliance Hospital, where he died shortly after arrival, police said.

The construction worker seated inside the Freightliner was not injured.

State Police said the investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact State Police Highland at 845-344-5300.

Additional details about Moyal’s life were not immediately available. Loved ones are invited to share a statement, funeral details, and/or photos by emailing mmashburn@dailyvoice.com.
