GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - Artificial intelligence, or AI, offers several benefits for Christmas shopping, but scammers are also finding ways to exploit it for fraud.
According to Alloy’s State of Scams Report , 85% of Americans worry that AI is making scams harder to recognize. The report found 28% of people worry about impersonations of their bank.
These impersonations are not rare in the Tri-Cities. A deepfake video of Grand Island Mayor Roger Steele recently circulated, claiming that Christmas lights were banned. The video was fake but raised concerns about other possible AI-generated content.
Josh Planos of the Better Business Bureau said people need to be wary of AI’s bad side during the giving season and should only shop with trustworthy merchants.
