Following council’s vote to delay discussing the matter last month, a councillor’s proposal to ban other countries’ flags from being flown at Calgary City Hall will be back on the agenda next week.
A notice of motion from Ward 13 Coun. Dan McLean was included on the consent agenda at Tuesday’s executive committee meeting, advancing the discussion to next week’s regular meeting.
His motion calls for the city to amend its policy that allows other countries’ banners to be raised on the city hall flagpole on their national day.
“The display of national flags at city hall, while originally intended as a gesture of respect and cultural recognition, has increasingly become a focal point for demonstrations, counter-demonstrations and heightened security concerns,” McLean’s motion states.
