ROCKLAND, Maine (WMTW) - The Rockland City Council has passed a local ordinance to limit the city’s involvement with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
The measure, which passed in a 4-to-1 vote on Monday, amends the city code to state that employees and resources cannot be used to assist immigration enforcement operations “except where legally required to do so by state or federal law or court order.”
“Rockland stands with all its residents,” said City Councilor Kaitlin Callahan. “We will protect our community and protect those who serve it and protect it.”
The move has received praise from immigrant advocacy groups in the state, including the ACLU of Maine.
