OAK HARBOR, Ohio — The Oak Harbor Village Council voted unanimously on an ordinance to make traffic cameras legal in the town at their meeting on Dec. 1.
The move comes after a Safe Routes to School study done in the 2024-2025 school year. Over the five-day study, over 1,000 drivers were caught going more than 10 miles per hour over the speed limit on State Route 163, and that was only during school-zone hours.
Oak Harbor Police Chief Eric Parker said those numbers are concerning.
"I think parents think they're safer in their cars, and we want to show parents that it is a safe village," he said.
If implemented, the cameras would be in the school zones right outside Oak Harbor High School, where the study was conducted.
