Syracuse, N.Y. — A major winter storm is expected to hit Central New York starting early Wednesday, bringing heavy snow and periods of freezing rain that could make travel difficult Wednesday morning into Thursday.

The National Weather Service says travel may be “very difficult,” especially during the Wednesday morning and evening commutes.

Much of the region — including Madison, Onondaga, Oneida, Chenango, Cortland, Delaware, Otsego, Cayuga and Sullivan counties — will be under winter weather advisories starting 4 a.m. Wednesday.

Those areas might see 2 to 7 inches of snow. Some ice is also expected to form during brief periods of freezing rain Wednesday afternoon, according to the weather service.

By Friday, Syracuse, the northern suburbs of Onondaga County and part of Madison County
