President Donald Trump told Politico that it would be “devastating” if the Supreme Court struck down his executive order seeking to end birthright citizenship.

In a wide-ranging interview with Politico published on Tuesday, Trump said that the 14th Amendment , the basis for birthright citizenship since 1868, was meant to apply only “to the babies of slaves.”

“And if you look at the dates on the case, it was exactly having to do with the Civil War,” Trump told Politico’s Dasha Burns. “That case was not meant from some rich person coming from another country, putting a foot in our country, and all of a sudden their whole family becomes United States citizens.”
