Immigration officials in Burlington detained a Springfield man whose deportation from the country was paused last week by a federal judge, according to LUCE Immigrant Justice Network.

Juan David Quichimbo Sumba was required to check in with immigration officials every week after a federal judge agreed to hear his case challenging his deportation order that came handwritten on a sticky note, his attorney said last week.

This morning, Quichimbo Sumba walked into the check-in meeting with his attorney at his side, according to Leela Ramachadran, a LUCE volunteer. Outside the office, more than 100 people had gathered for a prayer vigil in support.

A few minutes later, the attorney left the building crying, said Ramachadran. She was alone.
