Australia's Prime Miniser Antony Albanese has spoken of his pride as a social media ban for young people came into effect in the country.
"This is world leading. This is Australia showing enough is enough," he told a news conference at Kirribilli House in Sydney, attended by parents, stakeholders and grassroots campaigners for the ban.
"This is indeed a proud day to be Australian because make no mistake this reform will change lives."
Australia has introduced a world-first social media ban for children under 16, starting Wednesday.
Platforms like Facebook and TikTok face hefty fines if they don't comply.
Also speaking at the press conference was 12-year-old Florence Brodribb, a social media ban advocate.
"We deserve the chance to figure out who we are without algorithms telling us what to like, what to think, and how to feel," she said.
Experts have raised concerns about the enforceability of this policy, but Albanese said it was already a success because of the conversations it had started.
He also paid tribute to grieving parents who have helped fight for the ban after their children suffered online harm
