A man convicted of killing a woman during a home invasion almost four decades ago has been put to death in the United States.

Mark Allen Geralds, 58, was executed by a three-drug injection at Florida State Prison on Tuesday, December 9 for fatally stabbing Tressa Pettibone in February 1989.

Pettibone was attacked at her home on February 1, 1989. The Associated Press reported that Pettibone's then 8-year-old son arrived home from school and to find her fatally stabbed on the kitchen floor.

Geralds, a carpenter, had done remodelling work at the home about a year earlier.
