BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) - Recent changes proposed to the one big beautiful bill may impact how much you can borrow with federal student loans if you pursue a graduate or professional degree.

The Department of Education used to provide graduate students with federal loans that would front the entirety of their degree. The new plan has borrowing caps that depend on whether the higher education is federally distinguished as a professional degree or a graduate degree.

Under the new classification, 11 professional degrees, including law, medicine, dentistry, theology, and clinical psychology, can borrow up to $200,000, while graduate degrees like education, social work, Business, and nursing can only borrow up to $100,000 total.
