An 1864 New York Times article drooled over West Virginia’s “inexhaustible” mineral wealth: “... acres of coal ... petroleum ... iron ore veins ... fire clay seams ... great chalk beds ...” It was a bright future for profiteers, not the Mountain State. Whenever a resource is “discovered,” we get screwed.
