Cambodians near the border with Thailand took shelter in Siep Reap on Wednesday, days after Thailand launched airstrikes along the disputed border.

Cambodia fired back with rockets and drones, as both sides accused the other of breaking a ceasefire that paused with a ceasefire in July.

Families huddled in tents and waited to hear news of when they could return home.

Some feared for the safety of their pets and relatives who were not able to be evacuated.

The fighting renewed between the Southeast Asian neighbors and has driven tens of thousands of people to flee border areas in both countries.

Thailand and Cambodia have a history of hostility over centuries and experience periodic tensions along their more than 800-kilometer (500-mile) border. Both were once powerful empires, but Thailand's size and greater development over the past century give it the military advantage.

Some of the disputed territory hosts ancient temples that both nations covet as part of their heritage. Cambodia's Culture Ministry charged that Thai forces on Tuesday had damaged one, Ta Krabey temple, calling the alleged action “a reprehensible act (reflecting) profound immorality.”
