PORTLAND, Maine — The Portland Planning Board has approved a proposal Tuesday to build a 30-story, mixed-use tower in Old Port. Once constructed, it will be the tallest building in Maine.
The developers, East Brown Cow, said the 200,000-square-feet tower will contain 88 hotel units, 73 residential units, a restaurant, a café, and amenity space .
The tower, at 45 Union Street, will also have a public plaza that connects existing sidewalks on Exchange, Union, and Fore streets.
Despite the additional housing it will bring to the city, the new building has received mixed reactions.
"I think it's an eyesore. I think it transforms the Portland skyline in a way that isn't attractive to me," Portland resident Paul Correia told NEWS CENTER Maine last September .
