A day after a B.C. Supreme Court judge wished Wolfpack hitman Dean Wiwchar well in changing his life for the better, the killer allegedly attempted to escape from Surrey Pretrial jail, Postmedia has learned.

Justice Kathleen Ker sentenced Wiwchar Friday to 20 years after he pleaded guilty to involvement in two murder conspiracies and admitted he killed rival gangster Sandip Duhre in the Sheraton Wall Centre lobby in January 2012.

Wiwchar, now 40, expressed remorse at his sentencing hearing last month and said there was some good in him and that he was committed to changing his life.

On Friday, Kerr accepted that his remorse and desire to lead a pro-social life was genuine.
