ORLANDO, Fla. — The Mets' core has crumbled after a second straight dismal day for the club at Major League Baseball's Winter Meetings.
One day after Edwin Diaz headed west to Los Angeles, franchise home run king Pete Alonso ventured south to the Orioles, according to a report from ESPN's Jeff Passan. Alonso is moving on with a reported five-year, $155 million deal.
The deal represents a seismic shift for the Mets moving forward as they also dealt away Brandon Nimmo to the Rangers late last month.
The Mets now have an enormous void at first base and in the heart of their lineup to add to their holes in the outfield, bullpen and top of their starting rotation.
