OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney’s last-minute flight on a private jet to attend a peace summit in Egypt cost more than $700,000 after Canada’s air force was unable to make a plane available.
Carney went to Sharm-el-Sheikh for the signing of a deal that marked the end of the conflict between Israel and Hamas. The summit was held at the invitation of U.S. President Donald Trump , who helped to broker the deal.
The prime minister left Canadian media behind for the trip, travelling on the private aircraft with just a handful of staff members.
His office said at the time that none of the Royal Canadian Air Force’s airplanes was available to make the flight, which the Defence Department confirmed in documents tabled in Parliament this week.
