Does the Social Security Administration (SSA) realize it’s made online access disproportionately difficult for people of SS age?

In 2012, SSA launched its online “my Social Security” service, allowing users to change things like direct deposit information. In that year, according to the CDC, only about 10% of Americans over 65 lived in wireless-only households. So, this demographic would have tended to register their landlines when signing up for online SS access. About half of over-65s still have landlines today.

SSA now blocks online access until users verify their ID using internet-enabled smartphones to upload photographs of themselves and their photo IDs. As of recent, 76% of those over 65 own smartphones now, but many of those who do won’t have registered them with SSA.
