WASHINGTON — Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) wants to rename the part of 16th Street formerly known as Black Lives Matter Plaza for right-wing influencer Charlie Kirk.
Kirk was killed three months ago while speaking at a college in Utah, and on the anniversary of his death, the Republican congresswoman proposed a bill to rename 16th Street Northwest, between H and K streets, "Charlie Kirk Freedom of Speech Plaza."
That's the street in front of the White House that was covered in a mural and called Black Lives Matter Plaza from shortly after the murder of George Floyd in May 2020 up until a Republican congressman threatened to withhold federal funding from the District if Mayor Muriel Bowser didn't remove the lettering and rename the area back in March.
