AUSTIN, Texas — The University of Texas at Austin's Texas Quantum Institute (TQI) is getting a big financial boost from the state.

On Wednesday, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott announced a $4.8 million Texas Semiconductor Innovation Fund (TSIF) grant for the institute to establish a quantum semiconductor facility, called QLab.

The governor's office said the lab will help serve the state’s emerging semiconductor industry.

Semiconductors are considered the foundation of modern technology. They are the core of integrated circuits in virtually every electronic device.

In a release, Abbott said QLab will get state-of-the-art tools to advance semiconductor manufacturing in Texas by leveraging new developments in quantum science and technology.
