AUSTIN, Texas — Austin leaders took steps on Thursday to comply with a new Texas law commonly referred to as the "bathroom bill."

Austin City Council members unanimously passed a resolution spearheaded by District 7 leader Mike Siegel, which directs the city manger to craft a "Capital Improvement Plan" to promote gender inclusivity.

The Texas Women's Privacy Act, which went into effect last week, requires people to use restrooms, locker rooms and changing rooms in public buildings that correspond with their gender assigned at birth.

The law only applies to government-controlled buildings, as well as public school districts and universities. The issue that government entities are facing is how to police and enforce the policy since there is no specific guidance.
