LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Although the Kentucky State University campus is mourning the loss of a classmate, Gun Violence Archive data shows shootings across the nation are declining.
The KSU shooting on Tuesday is one of almost 25,000 gun violence incidents so far this year. While that number is high, Gun Violence Archive Executive Director Mark Bryant said it shows significant improvement, given the circumstances.
The Gun Violence Archive , an organization with Lexington roots that has tracked shootings nationwide since 2014, reports that gun violence peaked in 2021 and 2022 but has been declining over the past couple of years.
“The last two years have been very fortunate; we’ve been seeing numbers go down,” said Bryant. “Compared to last year, we’re down 20%, which is awesome.”
