A Greene County man was killed and several others were seriously injured in a three-vehicle crash that shut down Route 9W for hours.
The crash happened around 4:45 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9, in Athens, on Route 9W near Leeds-Athens Road, according to the Greene County Sheriff’s Office.
A preliminary investigation found that 57-year-old Darin Lucido was driving a Toyota Sienna southbound when he collided with a northbound Ford Explorer.
A third vehicle, a GMC Acadia traveling behind the Explorer, could not avoid the impact and struck between the two damaged vehicles, deputies said.
Lucido, of Cairo, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police. The occupants of the Ford Explorer suffered serious injuries and were taken to the hospital.
The occupants of the GMC Acadia were evaluated by EMS at the scene.
A LifeNet medical helicopter responded but was ultimately not used, officials said. Route 9W was closed for approximately five hours as emergency crews worked the scene.
Multiple agencies assisted, including New York State Police, Catskill Ambulance, Coxsackie Ambulance, Greene County Paramedics, West Athens Fire, Athens Fire, Greene County Emergency Services coordinators, and county dispatchers.
Additional details about Lucido’s life were not immediately available. Loved ones are invited to share a statement, funeral details, and/or photos by emailing mmashburn@dailyvoice.com.
