PORTLAND, Ore. — Two immigrant rights groups are suing Multnomah County and the county sheriff's office, alleging that a county jail contract with the U.S. Marshals Service violates Oregon's sanctuary law, which prohibits local law enforcement from assisting federal agents in immigration enforcement matters.

The lawsuit was filed by the Portland Immigrant Rights Coalition and the Interfaith Movement for Immigrant Justice, represented by the Oregon Law Center. The plaintiffs claim that the contract allows the jail to hold people who are in the custody of the U.S. Marshals for immigration law violations.
