PHOENIX (AZFamily) — A Phoenix couple has agreed to a plea deal after their infant died and investigators found their three other children severely malnourished in 2023. The couple has been in jail ever since.
As part of the agreement, prosecutors dropped first-degree murder charges against Janiece Brooks and Tremaure Stanley. Both parents still face serious prison time for several counts of child abuse.
Officers responded to an apartment near 79th Avenue and McDowell Road on July 28, 2023, after Brooks and Stanley told detectives they placed their baby in bed to sleep with them and woke up hours later to find their 5-month-old unresponsive.
When the baby died, they weighed just 6.6 pounds, far below a healthy range for their age.
