Ron Petro, the former University of Rhode Island athletic director who oversaw the greatest men’s basketball success to date in program history and helped lead a pair of major facility upgrades on campus, has died. He was 84.
The school announced Petro’s passing in a release Monday afternoon. He held the top athletics job in Kingston from 1992-2004, hired away from Alaska-Anchorage after nearly a decade with the Seawolves. The Rams captured 21 conference championships during Petro’s tenure and featured 27 coaches who earned individual recognition across 14 sports.
