New Delhi: The first hydrogen-powered vessel, built by State-run Cochin Shipyard Ltd for Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), has been commercially launched by Shri. Sarbananda Sonowal, Hon’ble Union Minister Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (India) at an event in Varanasi on 11 December 2025.
With this Varanasi will set a major milestone in India’s transition toward sustainable inland water transport as the commercial operations of the country’s first indigenous hydrogen fuel cell vessel will commence at Namo Ghat.
This breakthrough showcases India’s commitment to clean energy, innovation, sustainable inland waterways development. The initiative is part of the ongoing modernisation of India’s inland waterways which prioritize the cleaner transport, improved connectivity
