(WKYT) - In the lead-up to America turning 250 years old, we are looking back every day at ‘This Day In History.’
On this date in 1981, Muhammad Ali fought in his last professional match.
In his 61st professional fight, Ali faced Trevor Berbick in the Bahamas.
Despite his efforts, the 39-year-old Ali began to tire in the later rounds.
Berbick was declared the winner by unanimous decision, marking the official end of Ali’s illustrious career.
Ali himself admitted after the bout, “I think I’m too old. I was slow. I was weak. Nothing but father time.”
His all-time professional record was 56 wins and 5 losses with 37 knockouts.
