Study has found using one wash setting may help keep your clothes looking and feeling fresh for longer

Scientists have uncovered the ideal washing machine setting to prolong the freshness of your clothes.

In a study conducted in partnership with Procter and Gamble, the University of Leeds suggests using the coldest, quickest wash cycle.

The detergent giant teamed up with design school lecturer Lucy Cotton for a study investigating how machine washing leads to fabrics shedding microfibres. According to Popular Mechanics, these lost fibres can accelerate garment ageing and weaken fabrics.

Dozens of t-shirts of varying colours and materials were subjected to washes and then assessed for colour and microfibre loss.
