Health officials are warning that the UK is facing one of its toughest flu seasons in years, with a mutated strain of the virus spreading an unusually early and intense surge in cases.

The NHS issued an alert on Thursday (December 11) over the so-called 'super flu' strain, warning the health service is facing a 'worse case scenario' situation for December. New figures show hospitalisations from flu have surged by more than half in just one week, with an average of 2,660 patients per day in a hospital bed with flu last week - up 55 per cent from the week before.
