SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) - On this edition of Throwback Thursday, Lori Kent with the Local Lou Podcast teaches us about Colonel Melvin Grigsby.
“So, this story sort of starts in 1845 in Wisconsin, that’s where Melvin Grigsby was born, and it’s a really normal life. His family has a farm, he’s working at the farm, he’s going to school, he’s just kind of living his life. But the Civil War starts around him, and the moment he turns 16, he is asking permission from his dad and joining the Union,” said Kent.
Col. Grigsby served the Union for 3 years, but spent most of that time in the Andersonville Confederate Prison Camp.
After the war, Col. Grigsby returns to Wisconsin and attends law school to pursue a career as a lawyer.
He eventually makes his way to the Dakota Territory and
