NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - Kilmar Abrego Garcia has been ordered to be freed from immigration detention by a federal judge in Maryland, so what does that mean for the charges he’s facing in Tennessee?

U.S. District Judge Paula Xinis ruled that ICE must release Abrego Garcia from custody immediately on Thursday.

Now, no immigration issues are blocking his return to Tennessee to stand trial on charges stemming from a 2022 traffic stop .

The trial has been set for January 27.

Earlier in the week, an evidentiary hearing involving Abrego Garcia was canceled. It’s unclear when the hearing is set to be rescheduled.
