New details released last week by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provide a clearer picture of a rare, fatal rabies case involving a kidney transplant recipient treated in Toledo earlier this year.

WTOL 11 was first to report that a Michigan man died in January after receiving a transplanted organ at the University of Toledo Medical Center. The CDC has now officially confirmed the infection was passed through the transplanted kidney.

According to the agency in a report published on Dec. 4, the man died 51 days after receiving the kidney from a donor in Idaho. UTMC reported the suspected case to the CDC on Jan. 27.
