NORFOLK, Va. — The Virginia Department of Transportation will conduct routine tide gate testing at the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel early Sunday morning, Dec. 14, which could stop traffic for up to an hour in each direction.
Testing begins at 2 a.m. with eastbound traffic halted until 3 a.m., followed by a westbound stoppage from 3 a.m. to 4 a.m. VDOT crews are conducting the tests to ensure the tunnel is prepared for potential adverse weather.
Motorists traveling on Interstate 64 during the tests are encouraged to use the I-664 Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel as an alternate route to avoid delays.
Drivers can check real-time traffic conditions using VDOT’s free 511 Virginia tools, including the 511 website or the 511-integrated Waze GPS app.
