The renovated Freedom Center will reopen to the public Friday in northeast Oklahoma City with a sense of purpose, big plans moving forward and a deep connection to the nation’s civil rights history .
Formally known now as the Freedom Center of OKC, the landmark building served as the organizational home for the NAACP Youth Council for decades. Oklahoma City civil rights leader and educator Clara Luper created the Freedom Center in 1965 and acquired the building in 1967. Under her leadership, the center was the hub for her efforts to educate, hold meetings and keep young people involved in the community.
