RENO, Nev. (KOLO) - With holiday decorating and colder weather, the Reno Fire Department is urging residents to take precautions to prevent fires and carbon monoxide incidents, Fire Marshal John Beck said.
“It’s beginning to look a lot like fire danger,” Beck said, adding that unattended open flames and improper use of heating devices are frequent causes of holiday incidents.
Beck recommended using LED candles or essential-oil diffusers as flame-free alternatives to lit candles. He warned that decorations and certain lightbulbs can generate dangerous heat and said artificial trees are safer than real ones because they do not dry out. If homeowners use real trees, Beck advised keeping them watered and noted that pets may drink from tree stands.
