It might seem like a good idea to give a puppy or kitten to a loved one for Christmas, but officials are urging careful consideration before doing so.

The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development sent out a notice this week reminding the public that dogs and cats aren’t gifts that can be simply discarded or ignored.

“At MDARD, we want nothing more than to see animals go to loving fur-ever homes,” said State Veterinarian Nora Wineland, DVM, MS, DACVPM.

“However, pets are long-term commitments, requiring a person to have the time, space and other means to ensure they have a healthy, happy permanent home.”
