FLINT, MI -- A Genesee County jury has delivered a $3.7-million verdict against the city of Flint in a trial brought by the guardian of a bicyclist who was hit by a speeding Flint police vehicle in 2020.

But the verdict will cost the city, which is self-insured for up to $3 million, significantly less than the damage award because jurors found cyclist Donald Cameron was 49% responsible for the accident.

In Michigan, plaintiffs can recover damages if they are less than 50% at fault for their injury, but their award for some damages is reduced by their percentage of fault.

Cameron’s brother, Kenneth, sued the city, the Flint Police Department, and former police officer Christopher Delaney after the crash at a three-street intersection on Aug. 18, 2020.
