INDIANAPOLIS (WPTA) - A contentious bill meant to give Republicans a 9-0 advantage in Indiana’s congressional races failed in the Senate Thursday in a 19-31 vote.
The failure comes after the bill passed in the House of Representatives last week in a 57-41 vote.
The Senate first began meeting for the 2026 Indiana General Assembly on Monday, December 8.
House Bill 1032 quickly made its way through the Senate Elections Committee.
Three Senate Democrats then filed amendments on Wednesday. All of them failed in a voice vote, setting the chamber up for a vote on the bill Thursday .
The congressional maps would have altered throughout the state for the 2026 elections.
In northeast Indiana, District 3 would have changed with Noble and Whitley counties moving to District 2 and Huntington,
