Dick Van Dyke, the beloved star of “Mary Poppins” and “The Dick Van Dyke Show,” says giving up alcohol and cigarettes decades ago is one reason he’s still thriving at 99 years old. The actor, who turns 100 on December 13, shared his story at a recent event in Malibu, California.
Van Dyke admitted he smoked heavily and drank often in his younger years. By his 50s, he realized he had an addictive personality and decided to quit both habits for good. He believes that decision helped him avoid the health problems that cut short the lives of many of his peers.
The actor also credits his positive outlook for his longevity. He said he avoids anger and hate, believing those emotions harm a person’s health. Instead, he focuses on joy, humor, and staying active.
