Measles

Health officials have confirmed the school where the 10-year-old child diagnosed with measles attends. The case is the first in Connecticut since 2021 and has put many local families on alert.

The student attends Christian Heritage School in Trumbull, town officials announced. Local leaders said they are working with state health officials after identifying the school. The child was unvaccinated and had recently traveled outside the country.

Contact tracing is underway as health teams move fast to learn who may have been exposed.

“We are working with the family to be able to help determine all the elements of contact tracing that we will need to do,” Department of Public Health Commissioner Dr. Manisha Juthani said. “People who may have been in contact with this child will be notified.”

National numbers show how quickly measles is rising. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports about 1,900 cases across the country this year. It is the highest total since the virus was declared eliminated in the United States 25 years ago.

Health officials say most of the people who got sick were not vaccinated. The CDC reports that 92 percent of cases involved unvaccinated patients. Eleven percent were hospitalized. Three people have died.

Local leaders expect to notify more families as the investigation continues. They urge anyone with concerns to speak with their doctor and check their vaccination records.
