GLASTONBURY, Conn. (WFSB) - A Connecticut school district is encouraging parents to ban smartphones at home until eighth grade as part of growing concerns over children’s exposure to disturbing content on social media.
Glastonbury Public Schools has launched a pledge as part of the national “Wait Until 8th” campaign, asking parents to delay giving their children smartphones until the end of eighth grade. The district already prohibits cell phones in schools until high school.
“As we normalize delaying access to cellphones, forbidding access to social media, it certainly helps change the tide,” said Kate Lund, Glastonbury assistant superintendent.
Michele Cox, a Glastonbury parent with three children in elementary school, signed the pledge citing concerns about information overload.
