MINNEAPOLIS — Plans are moving forward for the redevelopment of George Floyd Square following back-and-forth vetoes and debate between members of the Minneapolis City Council and Mayor Jacob Frey on what that redevelopment should look like.

The City Council voted 9-4 on Thursday to approve the "flexible-open" street concept favored by Mayor Frey. The city said This concept will make the area safer for pedestrians, restore Metro Transit service on Chicago Avenue, and preserve and expand space for memorials, art, and community expression. The intersection would be open to traffic but could be closed during public events.
