Senior Congress leader and former Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil passed away on Friday at the age of 90. He died at his home, Devghar, in Latur at 6:30 AM, after being ill for several days.
Patil was elected seven times as a Member of Parliament from the Latur Lok Sabha constituency. He was a close confidant of former Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi and served as Defence Minister in their governments during the 1980s.
He also held the position of the 10th Speaker of the Lok Sabha from 1991 to 1996 and served as Union Home Minister from 2004 to 2008. He resigned from the post, taking moral responsibility for the security lapse during the Mumbai attacks.
