This week, Pakistan's academic landscape witnessed something it hadn't seen since Partition. Sanskrit verses, including passages from the Mahabharata and the Bhagavad Gita, were heard inside a classroom at the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) as the institution formally started teaching the language in a historic move.
Students are also being introduced to the Urdu rendering of " Hai katha sangram ki" , the iconic theme song of the Mahabharat TV series. Behind the renaissance of Sanskrit in Pakistan lies an overwhelming response from students and scholars to a three-month workshop on the language.
It has now evolved into a proper university course, with plans to make it a full year-long offering by 2027.
