GRAND ISLAND, Neb (KSNB) — The Heartland United Way held its annual toy distribution at Fonner Park Thursday, providing Christmas presents for more than 2,100 children from 1,021 families in Hall, Howard, Hamilton and Merrick Counties.

The event drew a large turnout of families seeking holiday assistance during difficult economic times.

“Times are hard,” said Sara Kirkley, spokesperson for the Heartland United Way. “I have 1,021 families signed up to get gifts. That’s 2,155 kids receiving gifts.”

Each family was allowed two gifts per child under 12, along with additional items including toys, books, food and hats.
