INDIANAPOLIS — Earlier this week there were 100 people who had gathered for a U.S. naturalization ceremony. It was expected to be one of the most joyous days of their lives. They were officially to become "Americans" and, because of their residency, "Hoosiers."
They expected to join the more than 450,000 Hoosiers who had immigrated to Indiana, which is about 6% of our population. Indiana's foreign-born population has grown substantially, increasing by over 35% from 2010 to 2022. According to the American Immigration Council, about 19% of Indiana's physicians are immigrants. About 13,500 of our medical doctors had been H-1B visa applicants.
