Police have released new details about a road rage incident in Orange County that they say ended with a knife-wielding man being shot by an off-duty police officer.

Troopers first responded to the scene around 3:45 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 11, on Dolsontown Road near McVeigh Road in Wawayanda, just outside the City of Middletown, as Daily Voice previously reported.

According to an update from State Police on Friday morning, Dec. 12, the incident began as a road rage confrontation between a 2020 Volkswagen and a 2021 Toyota pickup truck that lasted for about one mile along Dolsontown Road. Investigators said the situation escalated when the driver of the Volkswagen, who police identified as Wallace F. Fisher, 31, of Middletown, got out of his vehicle and approached the Toyota.

Police said a verbal argument took place at the driver’s side window of the pickup truck and then became physical, with Fisher brandishing a knife.

Soon after, the Toyota's driver, who police identified as 33-year-old Anthony Simon, an off-duty Kingston police officer, fired his weapon and hit Fisher, according to authorities.

Fisher was first taken to Garnet Health Medical Center and later transferred to Westchester Medical Center. State Police said he is currently listed in critical but stable condition.

State Police were helped at the scene by the City of Middletown Police Department and the Orange County Sheriff’s Office. Roads in the area were temporarily closed during the investigation.

Authorities said there is no ongoing threat to the public. The investigation remains active, and anyone who may have witnessed the incident is asked to contact State Police Middletown at 845-344-5300.

There is no word yet on whether any criminal charges will be filed.
