A state plan to widen a mile-long plus access road through the Horseneck Beach dunes drew a cool reception earlier last week from members of the conservation committee, who want state officials to justify why they believe the track needs to be widened to as much as 20 feet.

“I’m not the smartest guy in the room but I’ll tell you, it doesn’t make sense to me,” chairman Paul Joncas said.

In 2023, Department of Conservation and Recreation officials received WCC permission to clear out dune sand encroachment from the so-called “healthy trail” that runs from Bridge Road west to the interior of the Horseneck Reservation.
