WALKERVILLE — After its first game was cancelled due to weather, the Mason County Eastern girls varsity basketball team opened its 2025-26 campaign Thursday looking to start fast.
The Cardinals did exactly that, as they opened with a resounding West Michigan ‘D’ League win over Walkerville, 43-22, on the road.
“I was pleased with our effort for the first game of the year,” Mason County Eastern head coach Jacob Smith said. “Still many things to work on, but the girls were aggressive on the defensive end and we forced Walkerville into a lot of turnovers which led to some quality chances.”
Cardinals junior Annabelle Zwagerman was a force in the first quarter, scoring eight points. Eighth-grader Emma Whitaker added five points as MCE jumped out to an 18-2 lead after eight minutes.
